ADHEEENCE OE SHAIKH OE KUWAIT TO MARITIME TE/DCE EOR
ONE YEAE, 1841.

The purport of these lines is this that I, Subah bin Jaber, acting on behalf
of my father Jaber bin Abdullah-es-Subah, Ruler of Kuwait, have agreed to and
accepted, on behalf of myself, my subjects and my dependents, the engage
ment which has been concluded by His Honour Captain Hennell, the Resident
in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , with the Trucial Arab Shaikhs for the maintenance of
truce and peace against the exercise of aggression at sea, and that I shall have
no war and fight at sea with any of the Arab Shaikhs who are subscribers to
the peace and truce with the exalted British Government and that I shall
check my subjects and dependents from committing acts of aggression on the
other Trucial tribes at sea. Should, God forbid, any one commit an act of
aggression on my subjects and dependents at sea, I will not proceed immediately
to retaliate but will inform the aforesaid Resident, so that he may proceed to
carry out the necessary punishment and retaliation after enquiring into the
matter. I have undertaken for His Honour to observe the above from the date
of writing, viz., the 1st Rabi 1 1257 = (24th April 1841) until the period of one
full year.

Arrangement

There is a list of the serial numbers of the contents toward the front of each volume, on folios 3 and 23.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the foliation sequence commences at 1 on the front cover of volume one, the first folio after the outer cover. Volume one is numbered 1-20. The sequence then continues into volume two, resuming at 21, the first folio after the inner cover of that volume. Volume two is numbered 21-40. The sequence terminates at 40, the last folio before the back inner and back outer covers. These numbers are written in pencil, are enclosed in a circle, and appear in the top right hand corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. page of each folio. Incomplete printed pagination sequences also occur in both the English and Arabic sections.
