1819 to 1881, The favour of the Persian Government being
always a doubtful quantity, he acquired large estates in Turkish
territory that he might have a place of refuge and a means of

^ efforts to suppress piracy on the river, and he incurred the sus-
picion of his Persian Suzerain, who regarded relations between
^ Great Britain and this Shaikh of Muhammarah with a doubtful

intended to throw off his allegiance and transfer his principality

The treaty of Erzerum, which was ratified at Constantinople 1817,
on 21st March, 1848.
The main clauses in this treaty, which affected 'Arabistan
were :
Arlide 2.—Recognition of Persian Rights of Sovereignty, the
text of the article being, The Turkish Government formally
recognises the full sovereign rights of the Persian Government
to the town and port of Muhammarah, the island of Khidhr,
(Abadan) the anchorage and to the grounds on the east bank,
that is to say on the left bank of the Shatt-al-'Arab, which are
occupied by tribes recognised as under Persian jurisdiction."
