Genre/Subject Matter:

Informal photograph of children on board the Arabia en route to Bombay. Mary Irene Curzon, the eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Curzon, sits at centre in a white bonnet and dress. With her a further three children stand, sit and lie nearby. A woman in white kneels at left, facing away from the camera.

In the background a man sitting on a deck chair at centre looks towards the camera. At left in the background another woman sits in a deck chair. At left a woman and man stand (partially cropped out of photograph).

This is the first of two, nearly identical photographs taken from the same angle. The second is at Photo 430/75/19.

Ink, below image: ‘Irene on board Arabia Dec 25. 1898’

Pencil, alongside image at right: ‘18’

Temporal context:

This and the photographs that accompany it were taken en route to India at the end of 1898 and during the first year of Lord Curzon’s position as Viceroy of India, 1899.

Condition:

The image is buckled along with the card it is mounted upon. Several creases and scratches have been stabilised. Slight underexposure or toning have affected the quality of the print. Light surface dirt throughout.
