About this record
- Content
Letter regarding Sir Philip having learned from the Prime Minister (Benjamin Disraeli) that Lord Lytton (Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Baron Lytton) had secured Pelly's services and discussing recent accounts of Lord Lytton 's health.
The letter gives news of Sir Philip's daughter Louisa Frances and her husband Major Alfred Wake, who are in India, and his recent mission to Constantinople the report of which he had sent to Pelly.
The letter goes on to request Pelly's assistance in ascertaining why a promised appointment for his son Harcourt Ranking Rose, who was to be employed as part of the Viceroy (Lord Lytton)'s staff and whose appointment as an Aide de Camp was announced in the papers, had never materialised; and to attempt to discover whether there had been any deliberate attempt to injure his son's prospects.
The letter concludes by discussing the potential problems ahead for Pelly in relation to both finance in India and the recent silver depreciation and asking him for any news of Indian affairs.
