About this record

Content

Compendium (كناش) of medicine by Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭabarī al-Turunjī (أبو الحسن أحمد بن محمد الطبري الترنجي), personal physician to the Buyid amīr Rukn al-Dawlah (ركن الدولة; reg. 947-76).

A table of contents by a hand other than that of the main scribe appears on ff. 1Cr-3v.

According to the final colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , the copy was completed by Kaẓim (كاظم) in the month of Rajab during the second regnal year, but the monarch whose regnal year is intended is not mentioned (f. 659v, lines 4-7, transcribed below). More specific details are given in the colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. to Book Six, although this colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , in Persian, appears to have been added by another, perhaps later, hand and is therefore suspect. According to the colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. to Book Six, the copying of that section was completed at the residence of Sayyid Zayn al-‘Ābidīn (سيد زين العابدين) in Shāhjahānābād (Delhi) by Muḥammad Kāẓim Kashmīrī (محمد كاظم كشميري) on Thursday 3 Sha‘bān 1117/20 November 1705 (f. 301r, lines 18-21, transcribed below). This date is somewhat difficult to reconcile with the regnal date given in the final colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , since if we take that date to refer to the second year of the reign of Bahādur Shāh I whose reign began in 1119/1707, we get a completion date of Rajab 1121/September-October 1709, some four years after the completion of Book Six.

The text is divided into ten books (مقالات). Book One is subdivided into sections (فصول), and Books Two to Ten are subdivided into chapters (أبواب).

Contents:

  • Book One (المقالة الأولى; ff. 5v-48r);
  • Book Two (المقالة الثانية; ff. 48r-81r);
  • Book Three (المقالة الثالثة; ff. 82r-155v);
  • Book Four (المقالة الرابعة; ff. 155r-232v);
  • Book Five (المقالة الخامسة; ff. 233r-256r);
  • Book Six (المقالة السادسة; ff. 256v-301v);
  • Book Seven (المقالة السابعة; ff. 302v-407r);
  • Book Eight (المقالة الثامنة; ff. 407v-450r);
  • Book Nine (المقالة التاسعة; ff. 450v-550v);
  • Book Ten (المقالة العاشرة; ff. 550v-659v).
