AGREEMENT BETWEEN HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN OE THE
UNITED KINGDOM OE GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND
AND HIS HIGHNESS SYUD SAEED BIN SULTAN, “THE
SULTAN OE MU SKAT,” EOR THE TERMINATION OE THE
EXPORT OE SLAVES EROM THE AFRICAN DOMINIONS OE
HIS HIGHNESS THE SULTAN OE MUSKAT—1845.
Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Ireland being earnestly desirous that the export of slaves from the African
Dominions of His Highness the Sultan of Muskat should cease, and His High
ness the Sultan of Muskat in deference to the wishes of Her Majesty and of the
British nation, and in furtherence of the dictates of humanity which have
heretofore induced him to enter into engagement with Great Britain to restrict
the export of slaves from his dominious, being willing to put an end to that
trade and Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Ireland and His Highness the Sultan of Muskat having resolved to record with
due form and solemnity this further restriction of the export of slaves, and Her
Majesty having given due authority to Captain Hamerton, Her Representative
at the Court of the Sultan of Muskat, to conclude an agreement with His
Highness, accordingly His Highness Syud Saeed bin Sultan, for himself, his
heirs and successors, and Captain Hamerton on behalf of the Queen of the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, her heirs and successors have
agreed upon and concluded the following Articles :—
Article 1 .
His Highness the Sultan of Muskat here engages to prohibit, under the
severest penalties, the export of slaves from his African Dominions and to issue
orders to his officers to prevent and suppress such trade.
Article 2 .
His Highness the Sultan of Muskat further engages to prohibit, under the
severest penalties, the importation of slaves from any part of Africa into his
possessions in Asia, and to use his utmost influence with all the Chiefs of Arabia,
the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , in like manner, to prevent the introduction
of slaves from Africa into their respective territories.
Article 3.
His Highness the Sultan of Muskat grants to the ships of Her Majesty’s
Navy as well as to those of the East India Company, permission to seize and
confiscate any vessels, the property of His Highness or of his subjects, carrying

The volume consists mainly of six bound compilations of treaties and undertakings, together with related correspondence and other supplementary material, made between the British Government and the British Protectorates of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , 1820-1919. These treaty compilations were published by the Government of India in 1919 and comprise: the Trucial Treaties to January 1906, Treaties with Rulers of Kuwait from 1841 to 1913, Treaties with the Sultan of Oman and Muscat from 1845 to 1914, Undertakings with the Trucial Chiefs of Oman from 1911 to 1912, Treaties with the Shaikh of Mohammerah from 1899 to 1919 and Treaties with the Rulers of Bahrain from 1820 to 1914. In addition, there is a separate Foreign Office ‘Memorandum on British Commitments (During the War) to the Gulf Chiefs’ made in 1916, which contains at Appendix A, the English text of the treaty made with the Ruler of Qatar in 1916. The treaty compilations are published in English and Arabic, except for the treaties with the Shaikh of Mohammerah, which are published in English and Persian.
