people of Kuwait and, as regards me, Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, and my heirs
after me, the desire of the precious Imperial English Government is that the
friendship between the precious Imperial English Government and the Shaikh
of Kuwait may be perpetual.
And, finally, I, Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, at the express wish of the pre
cious Imperial English Government hereby promise that this agreement shall
be kept absolutely secret, until such time as the precious Imperial English Gov
ernment gives permission for its disclosure. And I, Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah,
ruler of Kuwait, on behalf of myself and on behalf of my heirs after me, have
accepted each and all of the terms set forth in this agreement, and, therefore,
I have set my seal this eighth day of Eamthan, 1325 H., corresponding to this
fifteenth day of October, 1907 A.D., and to what I say God is the best witness
and protector.

Translation of acceptance of lease of Shwaikh lands.
In the name of God, the Exalted !
This agreement is from me, Major S. G. Knox, Political Agent of the pre
cious Imperial English Government in Kuwait, on behalf of the precious
Imperial English Government, to Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, ruler of Kuwait,
on behalf of himself and his heirs after him. The reason of writing this paper
is that I, Major S. G. Knox, Political Agent of the precious Imperial English
Government, on behalf of the precious Imperial English Government, have,
subject to the important provision contained in paragraph 3 below, taken on lease
in perpetuity from Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, ruler of Kuwait, on behalf of
himself and his heirs, the land of which the boundaries are detailed below and
south of Bander Shwaikh
Firstly —The boundary of the land on the north-west shall be 7 ,500 cubits
m length m a straight line and situated in it the coal-house which Shaikh
Mubarak-us-Subah has constructed in these days in the aforesaid land and the
straight line shall march, as far as possible, corresponding with the sea-line,
but, apart from these two conditions, it shall be lawful to me, or to anv other
person, duly authorised on behalf of the precious Imperial English Government,
to draw this direct north-western boundary at our choice and pleasure, and such
boundary shall be accepted by Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, ruler of Kuwait on
behalf of himself and on behalf of his heirs after him.
" And secondly, (as to) the eastern side and the western side, the length
of each side (shall be) six hundred cubits, and the southern side seven thousand
and five hundred cubits, and the whole land (shall be) rectangular ; and from
this land, there shall come from it to Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, ruler of
Kuwait, and to his heirs after him, a piece from the north side, on which shall
be the coal-house above-mentioned; on the four sides the length of each side
shall be three hundred cubits, the whole amounting to a thousand and two
iiunclred cubits, exclusive of the measurement of the house, and (the space)
opposite this piece, on the north, shall be to Shaikh Mubarak-us-Subah, ruler of
Kuwait, and to his heirs after him."

Thirdly.--'In explanation of the preceding paragraph, the aforesaid lands
are embraced by one line, the length of which is 16,200 cubits. Exclusive of
