Letter regarding further happenings in Muscat; the loss of the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. Steamer Berenice and attempts by the finance committee in Calcutta to take away steam vessels.
The letter also includes an account of Sayyida Salme (known as Emily Ruete), sister of Majid bin Said of Zanzibar, including her liaison with a German man (Rudolph Ruete) and her escape to Aden on Highflyer as well as her intention to travel to Europe.
The letter also reports on Merewether's work in attempting to secure the release of Hormuzd Rassam and the British missionaries held prisoner in Abyssinia; news that the steamer service from Muscat to Aden may restart; and Sir Bartle Frere's appointment to the Council of India.
A postscript to the letter informs Pelly that the additional troop of horse Merewether had been requesting has been sanctioned.
