General Ri^by formerly the Right Honourable the Governor's Agent here, and accompanied
this by a sword of honour, a piece of embroidered cloth, and an elephants task of unusual
kngth and weight, s ^ ^ an acknow iedgment of services rendered
spontaneously by General Rigby to his Ambassadors Seyd Mohamed bin Salem and suite
during their mission to Her Majesty in England. ^ ^

Sir ' I HAVE the honour to report, for the information of the Right Honourable the
Governor in Council, that H. A. Churchill. Esq.. C.B., His Excellency s Agent here, has
been obliged, from bad health, to leave his post suddenly, and pass on his trust into my
hand You are aware that Mr. Churchill's health suefered severely in September last; and
that he had in consequence to quit Zanzibar on medical certificate. He was then
to proceed to Bombay, it being the cool season there at that time, and not to return
African coast until his health should be re-established.

The file contains translated copies of correspondence between the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed and the Viceroy of India, John Laird Mair Lawrence as well as translated correspondence between an Envoy of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lord Stanley [Edward Henry Stanley].
On folio 42r, the file contains a translation of a letter from Queen Victoria to the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed. The letter confirms the friendly relations between the two and informs the Sultan that a sword has been specially commissioned for him as a gift.
The file also contains translated correspondence between the Sultan of Johanna [Anjouan Island, now part of the Comoros Islands] and Henry Adrian Churchill, Britain's Agent in Zanzibar.
