His Majesty's Government assume that you contemplate
preliminary oral discussions with Shaikh in the light of which
letter would be given to him before you leave Qatar on the
lines proposed by you in paragraph 8 of your telegram No.372 of
April 22nd last, but also embodying whatever concessions it had
been found necessary to make regarding recognition and juris-
diction. They agree to this.
2. They agree that you should reply to him regarding
internal support as suggested in paragraph 8 (c) of your
telegram of 22nd April No.372. You may also if course of
discussion shows this is essential recognise Hamad as heir
apparent (subject to his acceptance of 1916 obligations on his
succession). Meaning of such recognition however should be
clearly understood by Shaikh. It means that we should be
prepared to accept Hamad f s succession when the time comes and
implies our moral support but not necessarily that we should
intervene in internal affairs ofQatar by giving him active
• /
support Jn the event of his succession being violently disputed.
You may also if this is necessary grant request regarding
British protected persons who are subjects cf Kuwait, Bahrain

The volume contains correspondence and telegrams between the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at Bahrain and the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. at Bushire, the Government of India, the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. in London and Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) representatives in regard to the final negotiations with the Sheikh of Qatar before the signing of the oil concession.

The volume contains:the Qatar oil concession, signed by the Shaikh of Qatar, ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī, and APOC on 17 May 1935, in Arabic and English (folios 67-86) 'Sketch map of Qatar Peninsula' (folio 87); agreement 5 June 1935 between the British Government and APOC regarding the Qatar Oil Concession (folios 211-212).

There are some letters in Arabic, to and from the Sheikh of Qatar.

Arrangement

The documents in the volume are mostly arranged in chronological order. There are notes at the end of the volume, (folios 222-226). The file notes are arranged chronologically and refer to documents within the file; they give a brief description of the correspondence with reference numbers in red crayon, which refer back to that correspondence in the volume.

There is also an brief index at the beginning (f. 2) indicating the main topics covered in the volume.

Physical characteristics

The main foliation is written in pencil, circled, and can be found in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The numbering commences at the title page with 1, then 2-86; 87 and 87A and it carries on until 229, which is the last number given to the last folio of the volume.A second foliation sequence runs between ff. 3-220; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled, and can be found in the same position as the main sequence.
