Majesty's Government expect the Shaikh to take all reasonable
steps for his own defence and for maintaining order within his
own frontieri (paragraph 2 (b)). The letter goes on to

explain (paragraph 2 (c)) that His Majesty's Government propose
to assist the Shaikh through the Royal Air Force, while para
graph 2 (d) covers the air facilities which His Majesty's
Government expect should be put at their disposal. It was

used. The last part of paragraph 2 (d) covers the visits
of aircraft and Officers to Qatar whenever the Air Officer

this paragraph covers Intelligence activities on the part of
the Royal Air Force.
3. Letter No.2 recapitulates all the points in connection
with jurisdiction. Paragraph 6 limits His Majesty's Govern
ment's support in internal affairs to difficulties arising
from the presence of the Oil Company• The last sentence of
this paragraph was inserted at the Shaikh's request and is
innocuous. Paragraph 7 mentions what is of course obvious
that the arrangements entered into are subject to the Oil
Concession being given to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
4. Letter No.3 is from Hamad promising to accept on his
accession the Treaty of 1916.
5. Letter No.4 is to the Shaikh suggesting that the Treaty
of 1916 should be converted into an heirs and successors one,

The volume contains correspondence and telegrams between the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at Bahrain and the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. at Bushire, the Government of India, the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. in London and Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) representatives in regard to the final negotiations with the Sheikh of Qatar before the signing of the oil concession.

The volume contains:the Qatar oil concession, signed by the Shaikh of Qatar, ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī, and APOC on 17 May 1935, in Arabic and English (folios 67-86) 'Sketch map of Qatar Peninsula' (folio 87); agreement 5 June 1935 between the British Government and APOC regarding the Qatar Oil Concession (folios 211-212).

There are some letters in Arabic, to and from the Sheikh of Qatar.

Arrangement

The documents in the volume are mostly arranged in chronological order. There are notes at the end of the volume, (folios 222-226). The file notes are arranged chronologically and refer to documents within the file; they give a brief description of the correspondence with reference numbers in red crayon, which refer back to that correspondence in the volume.

There is also an brief index at the beginning (f. 2) indicating the main topics covered in the volume.

Physical characteristics

The main foliation is written in pencil, circled, and can be found in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The numbering commences at the title page with 1, then 2-86; 87 and 87A and it carries on until 229, which is the last number given to the last folio of the volume.A second foliation sequence runs between ff. 3-220; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled, and can be found in the same position as the main sequence.
