-En the lands so granted the Company
shall for the period of their agreement
enjoy full proprietary rights.
The Sheikh also recognises that the Com
pany has the right to acquire all and any
other lands and buildings necessary for the
said purpose with the consent of the pro
prietors on such conditions as may be
arranged between the Company and the
said proprietors without their being al
lowed to make demands of a nature to sur
charge the prices ordinarily current for
lands and buildings situated in their respec
tive localities.
At the expiry uf the agimnuit (he
ground and all immovable property left by
the Company shall bo handed back to the
-Sheikh.-
It is however understood that within
the leased area the Company shall be
entitled to acquire only such land as is
necessary for their pipe-lines, refineries,
offices and other works and that save, in so
far as it is necessary in order to enable their
pipe-lines and railways to pass freely
to their destination, they shall not occupy
any land outside the leased area which
might otherwise be leased for the produc
tion of oil to a third party, unless they can
satisfy the Sheikh that no other land suit
able for their purpose is available.

■IN oonoidcration of the grant oi' tl^s
lease, the Company undertakes to D€ty to
the Sheikh within 60 days after^fs grant,
the sum of Rs. 10,000 and ttter^urther sum
of Rs. 10,000 on each awfuversary of the

The volume contains correspondence and telegrams between the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain, the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in Bushire and representatives of the Bahrain Petroleum Company Limited (BAPCO) on the storage tanks calibration for the purpose of calculating the royalties payable to the Sheikh of Bahrain and on the first shipments of oil from Bahrain to Japan and Singapore.

The volume includes a copy of the draft lease contract with notes (folios 55-64), newspaper cuttings on oil in Bahrain and House of Commons' questions on Bahrain (folios 204-205). There are letters in Arabic with English translation, to and from the Sheikh.
