DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
BUREAU OF STANDARDS
George K. Burgess, Director
supplement to circular no. 154
[Issued October 27, 1931]
abridged volume correction table for
petroleum oils
[Approved by The American Petroleum Institute, The American Society for Testing Materials, The
Bureau of Mines, and The Bureau of Standards. For complete table, see Table 2, Circular No. 154]
The table contained herein has been prepared to meet a demand
from the oil industry for a short and convenient table for reducing
oil volumes to the basis of 60° F. when extreme accuracy is not
required. It is not intended to replace the more complete and accu
rate volume correction table contained in Circular No. 154, but
rather to supplement it and especially to replace the various abridged
tables and approximate correction factors heretofore employed in the
oil industry. In case high accuracy is essential the complete table
contained in Circular No. 154 should be used, especially if large
volumes or wide temperature ranges are involved. To avoid possible
confusion all contracts should state which table is to be used.
The abridged table is based on the same data as Table 2, Circular
No. 154. The groups, coefficients of expansion, degrees A. P. I.,
and gravity ranges of the abridged table follow:

1 Motor fuels containing benzol may be arbitrarily placed in Group III without serious error. Their
expansion coefficients are higher than for straight run petroleum oils of equivalent specific gravity. (See
B. S. Journ. Research (IIP393), vol. 7; December, 1931.)
This table shows the volume occupied at 60° F. by a quantity
of oil occupying unit volume at the indicated temperatures. For
example, if at 60° F. the degrees A. P. I. of the oil is 28 (Group I),
1 gallon of this oil measured at 120° F. will have a volume of 0.9763
gallon at 60° F. The values given in the table are in the form of
"multipliers"; that is, the volume of oil at the indicated tempera
ture and degrees A. P. I. for each group, multiplied by the corre
sponding factor in the table, equals the volume at 60° F. For ex
ample, if the degrees A. P. I. of an oil at 60° F. equals 28 (Group I)
and the volume at 120° F. equals 6,000 gallons, then the volume at
60° F. equals 6,000 X 0.9763, or 5,857.8 gallons.

About this item

Content

The volume contains correspondence and telegrams between the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain, the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in Bushire and representatives of the Bahrain Petroleum Company Limited (BAPCO) on the storage tanks calibration for the purpose of calculating the royalties payable to the Sheikh of Bahrain and on the first shipments of oil from Bahrain to Japan and Singapore.

The volume includes a copy of the draft lease contract with notes (folios 55-64), newspaper cuttings on oil in Bahrain and House of Commons' questions on Bahrain (folios 204-205). There are letters in Arabic with English translation, to and from the Sheikh.

There is an index at the end of the volume (folios 248-258).

Arrangement

The documents in the volume are arranged in chronological order. There is an index at the end of the volume (folios 248-258). The index is arranged chronologically and refers to documents within the volume; it gives brief description of the correspondence with a reference number, which refers back to that correspondence in the volume.

Physical characteristics

The main foliation system starts on the 5th sheet with 1 and finishes with 259, wich is the last number given, on the 5th sheet from the back of the volume; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled and may be found in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio.

Foliation anomalies: 56A and 56B; 57A and 57B; 58A and 58B; 60A and 60B; 61A and 61B; 61A and 61B; 63A and 63B.

Foliation omissions: folio 233

A second foliation sequence starts on folio 14 and continues through to folio 247; the numbering for this sequence starts at 13. These numbers are also written in pencil and may be located in the same position as the main sequence.
