Sir
I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter No. P.Z. 2797/38,.
dated 3rd May [No. 7], relating to a concession obtained during 1937 by this
Company from the Shaikh of Sharjah.
I beg hereby formally to confirm the Company’s acceptance of the arrangements
embodied in letter No. C/929/10/12, dated 23rd December 1937, from the Political
Agent, Bahrain, to the Ruler of Sharjah [No 3j. and confirmed in the reply of the
latter dated 23rd Muharram 1357 (26th March 1938) [No. 4].
The Company will be glad to receive notice of His Majesty’s Government’s
formal approval of the concession concerned.

Sir,
I am directed by the Secretary of State for India to acknowledge the receipt
of your letter dated the 4th May (No. P.C. 31) [No. 8], on the subject of the Sharjah
Oil Concession, and to express on behalf of His Majesty’s Government their formal
approval of the concession granted to the Company by the Sheikh of Sharjah
on the 17th September 1937.

With reference to paragraph 4 of my letter No. C/929-10/12 dated the
23rd December 1937 [No. 3], I have been instructed by His Majesty’s Government
to inform you that the arrangements set forth in that letter and your acceptance
of them conveyed in your letter No. 2 dated the 23rd Muharram 1357 (corresponding
to the 26th March 1938) [No. 4], have been communicated to Petroleum Concessions,
Limited, and that the Company formally confirm their acceptance of these
arrangements.
2. I am now to express to you on behalf of His Majesty’s Government their
approval of the Agreement concluded by you on the 17th September 1937 with
Petroleum Concessions Limited [No. 1].

The majority of the file covers an amendment to the 1937 concession agreement between the oil company, Petroleum Concessions Ltd, and Shaikh Sultan that was made in February 1946. This amendment was made in order to extend the permitted drilling period following the Second World War, during which no drilling was carried out. Permission to open negotiations over the matter was sought from the British Government by the company. There is a copy of the agreed amendment on folio 72.
