Would you please refer to your letter (E.12335/198/91)
of 3rd November about certein asps t repared under the
direction of the Ourveyor-Generel of India, showing the
country round Muscat.
The maps are old ones and, so ft-r as we can see, show
nothing justifying a security classification. It is,
however, for the Government of India and not for any United
Kingdom authority to "declasrify" them. We think that
there is no harm in the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. giving copies of
these maps to the Muscat authorities for their own use
only but we think that we should not connive at any
reproduction of them, which night result in copies being
generally available in the area, without observing the
formality of asking the permission of the Governmtnt of
India •
If you agree, perhaps you would inform the Political
Agent accordin ly. - e should be glad to make the
necessary approach to the Government of India if the
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. so desires but he may prefer t > do this
direct•
I am returning the maps herewith. We have kept a
note of their numbers in case you should ask us If ter
on to take up with the Government of India the question of
reproduction.
Yours sincerely,
