I
l
thorough:rained them to believe that the British Govern
ment and people are their friends and supporters against
their outside foes. As Siddik Hassan said, though he Wa s
looked upon as a Kafir with i'arhan at every Akhwan Camp they
c&iLe to, they were welcomed with such words as "Welcome,
welcome, you English people, though you are ICafirs you are
tne friends of our Imam, so thrice welcome are you"*
regarding the actual dispute between Bin Saud and Shaikh
Salim. From talks I have had with Shaikh Isa, Shaikh Hamad
and others who know the Bedouin well, the settling of a
boundaiy oetween the two rulers should not present much
difficulty provided a definite line ( European style) be
not allowed to come into the question. Salim may possibly
try and insist on this, but he should not be encouraged.
The only line to take in my opinion is something as
foilows:-
Bin Saud and Salim to be first asked what actual tribes
they claim as belonging to them. This ought to be settled
fairly easily. As we know the Ajman, Mutair Bani Khalid
Bani Kaj ar etc*, all belong to the former. The Rashaida,
i
Awazim and one or two other less important elements are
similarly known to belong to Koweit. The next question to
settle is the tt MUGAfITH M or summer camping ground of say
Shaikh Salim’s tribes. This will give us the names of
a whole series of wells, as the spots where the Bedouin
summer must be on a well* If we can find out where such
wells are, and if they can be proved to be the camping
places of Salim’s Bedouins, ( this should be quite easy
if say Ibn Hathlain and Hamfid al Suwait were present) th
rest is simple, all such wells go to Shaikh Salim*
