My telegram 497-B. of Pebruai|y 5th. On February 10th Grahame wired
from Kamuz saying that two Khans show utmost suspicion of Khans in Tehran
and refused to sign any general agreement unless latter’s concurrence was inti
mated first.
Utmost Grahame was able to do was to get Khans to send telegram to
Khans in Tehran empowering then! to sign any agreement there on their
behalf and undertake ratification of signatures here.
As an alternative they were prepared to enter into minor agreement
regarding themselves personally. Khan pressed for urgent necessary (neces
sity ?) of their proceeding to Behbehan to control situation there.
To-day 13th Grahame telegraphs this morning as advance party of Khans
contingent was starting for Behbehan in presence of Khans and Grahame, it
was mobbed by angry crowd of Bamuz inhabitants.
Ostensible reason for their attitude was said to be arrest by us a few days
before of a Persian at Bandiqir caught in act of attempting to distribute most
violent anti-British leaflets among Indian cavalry now there.
Biot believed to have been instigated by hostile element at Behbehan who
are in telegraphic touch with Bamuz.
Later telegram says Khans state that heavy indemnity exacted from
Bamuz and ringleaders arrested. Grahame was to have proceeded with Khans
to Behbehan at my earlier suggestion but says that Khans having urged his
presence would embarrass them and requested him not to come. He is there
fore returning to Ahwaz. He and Haji Bais express confidence of loyalty of
Ilkfiani and Illbegi.
