The file also contains a note on the Eastern Bureau and Basrah [Basra] Office dated [1916].

Context of creation

A note on the work and functions of the Eastern Bureau and the Basra Branch dated [1916] is as follows:

• the collection and distribution of information concerning Near Eastern questions in general and the Turkish Empire in particular;
• the co-ordination of propaganda and the work of the press in favour of Great Britain among non-Muslims without clashing with the susceptibilities of the Entente Powers or the Muslims of India;
• the creation and encouragement of pro-Entente and anti-German feeling in Iraq, the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and South Eastern Arabia through Political Officers and by means of native agents Non-British agents affiliated with the British Government. ;
• to send reports to the Cairo Bureau, to the Foreign Department,and to London;
• to circulate copies of publications such as books, maps, etc., dealing with geography, history, and social conditions.
