Content

The volume consists of Enclosures to Despatches to the East India Company Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. , dated 9 September-27 December 1837. The Despatches themselves are not included in the volume.

The main subjects covered by the enclosures include: negotiations over a modified treaty with the new King of Oude; affairs in Nepal, including the removal of the King's Minister, and the death of the King's son; the affairs of Ranjit Singh, Ruler of the Punjab; and affairs in Afghanistan, including correspondence from Captain Alexander Burnes, on a Commercial Mission to Kabul, and Charles Masson. IOR/L/PS/5/128, ff 317-366 contains reports by the Commander-in-Chief, India, on the military defence of India.

The volume is divided by a number of blue dividers, to which are attached white tabs numbered in red 11-22, running from the front to the rear of the volume. These represent the number of each Despatches to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. . There is no number 16. The Enclosures within each Despatch (tab) are preceded by an Abstract of Contents, in which the Despatch itself (not included) is numbered 1, the Abstract of Contents 2, and the Enclosures 3, 4, etc. The Enclosures are then filed in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The numbers listed in the Abstract of Contents are recorded for reference on the last verso The back of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'v'. of each Enclosure, along with the reference, description, and date of receipt by the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. .

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 769; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. A previous foliation sequence, which is also circled, has been superseded and therefore crossed out. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves.
