The volume contains correspondence and memoranda relating to the affairs of the Aden Protectorate. The correspondence is mostly between the Political Residency A diplomatic office of the British Government established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. in Aden, the Political Agency An office of the British Government and, earlier, of the East India Company. in Dthala [al-Ḍāli‘], the Government of Bombay, the Government of India, the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , and the Foreign Office. There are many enclosures to the correspondence, often in the form of printed series of related papers. This includes translations of correspondence to and from tribal leaders.

The papers cover discussions around a number of main subjects:

  • the deployment and later withdrawal of a British officer and troops at Dthala;
  • inter-tribal relations;
  • the delineation of the Ottoman Turkish border to the north;
  • treaty negotiations with some of the tribes of the hinterland.

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the rear to the front of the volume.
