The discussion in the file relates to:

• Negotiations over concessions for oil exploration in the Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates.
• The impact of the negotiations on the behaviour of the Trucial Shaikhs and their territorial claims and boundary disputes
