The file contains three items of confidential correspondence (reference numbers 127/5/48; S.O. No.C/L-203; D.O.No.C/305-9A) between the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf Historically used by the British to refer to the sea area between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Often referred to as The Gulf or the Arabian Gulf. , Bahrain; Cornelius James Pelly ( Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Bahrain) and Charles Dalrymple Belgrave (Adviser to the Bahrain Government).

At the request of the Resident, Pelly investigated the recent distribution and sale of the newspaper al-Arab in Bahrain, by local bookseller Salman Kamal, at first mistakenly identified as Ibrahim bin Mohammed. Pelly sought the advice of Belgrave.

Arrangement

File papers are arranged chronologically. At the end of the file are two pages of file notes including a list of file contents, which comprise three documents. The list also records the reference numbers ‘1’, ‘2’ and ‘3’ which have been written on the three documents in blue or red crayon.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: numbered 1 to 5 in pencil in the top right hand corner and encircled. The numbering starts at the front of the file, on the first file enclosure (f.1) and ends on the inside cover at the back of the file (f.5). The front file cover is not foliated.
