MUSKAT.
Moolla Ha«sain, the Shaikh of Kishm, who, availing Viiraself of the
troubles that ensued on the death of the late Imaurn. possessed h.m-
self of that place and harbour, and of Grraus. .w island of
51 Svud Beder recovered Bunder Abbas, and also the island
Ormus the possession of those places being an object of importance,
as all 'the ports belonging to or connected with the Jo^smee pirates
drew from them their supplies of dates and gral . y Bu , nder
on this occasion to allow the Company to establish a factoiy at Bunder
Abba« on the same terms as those granted by Shah Abbas on the first
settlement of the English at that place, or on any "^er terms we m>gh
choose to dictate; which could not, however, be accepted, without the
concurrence of the Persian Government. This 0 ^ f
consequence of Captain Seton having accompanied Syud Bcder on .
^xDedition with two of the Company's cruisers.
' 52 Affairs in the Gulf, however, were stilt far from assuming
settled appearance, as Syud Gheif, aided by Moolla Hussain, and other
partisans, had recommenced hostilities with Syud Bedcr, and compelled
the latter to call in a Wahabee force. , u +1^
53. Operations were also at this period actiirely prosecuted by
Company against the Joasmee pirates, m con-
a. d . 1806. junction with the Muskat Government, in conse>
quenccofthe capture of the Shannon and Trimmer. The combined forces
nroceeded to the island of Kishm, where they blockaded a fleet of Joas-
mees who, being reduced to distress, Captain Seton agreed to grant them
a truce until the pleasure of the Government should be known; explain-
i„<r on this occasion, as his reason for refraining from hostilities, the im
possibility of prosecuting them with vigour or effect, without offending
either tlm Persians or the Wahabees This truce led to the conclusion
of the treaty with the Joasmees dated the 6th Febiuary 1&06.
54 The tranquillity of the Gulf was further promoted by he
reduction, by Syud Beder, of the fort of Bidbid, which commands the
entrance of Oman, and of Keriat, leaving Muttra and its fort alone to
Svud Gheif, who engaged to surrender the possessions of the late
Tmaum, except Kabara, and left it optional with Syud Beder to assign
to him the revenue of Muttra. . . , . ,
55. The Joasmees remained true to the engagement concluded with
Captain Seton in every point that regarded the
a. d . 1807. Company, but co -operated with Syud Beder in
an attack on Syud Gheif, who refused to become a party to the peace,
as he could not in honour do, until he had revenged the blood of Syud

Physical characteristics

Pagination: two separate pagination sequences are present in the volume. The first sequence (pp. i-xviii) commences at the first page and terminates at the list of maps (p. xviii). A second pagination sequence then takes over (pp. 1-688), commencing at the title page and terminating at the final page. Both these pagination sequences are printed, with additions in pencil, and the numbers are found at the top (left, right or centre) of each page.

The fold-outs in this volume were not paginated by the publisher. As a result, these have been foliated using the nearest page number. For example, the fold-out attached to p.51 has been numbered as 51A.
