between Bahrain and the rainland. It ia at leaot pro
bable that trade with Haaea via Bahrain oould be appre
ciably increased by judicious ^nushinp^ by obtaining
facilities fron Bin Saud for instance for the residence
of Indian traders in his dominions etc - but any action
in tMs direction would better perhaps be nostponed
until it is seen more clearly what is likely to be the
stability of Bin Baud's rule in Haaaa, and whether he
is likely to retain a firm ptrip on it» Preaent indi-

It may be noted here that Hindu traders are not
popular on the mainland, where by their rrroater business
ability, and more powerful bac^inc in the wav of orga
nised capital, they tend inevitably to take the trade
out of the hands of their local comnetitors. So the
present method of trade by which Arabs of Bahrain enter
into contracts with the Hindu merchants, which contracts
the former carry out by visits to the mainland, is the
least likely to create friction, and is therefore pro
bably the most suitable for the time bein^* At the same
time auch a method ia by no meana the best commercially,
and for trad© intercourse between Bahrain and Hassa to
reach its maximum it would be necessary for ^Tlndu traden
to be actually resident on the mainland.
