Aqrābādhīn madīnat al-salam أقراباذين مدينة السلم Ibn al-Tilmīdh, Hibat Allāh ibn Ṣā‘id ابن التلميذ، هبة الله بن صاعد [‎112r] (221/255)

The medical formulary of Amīn al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥasan Hibat Allāh ibn Ṣa‘īd known as Ibn al-Tilmīdh (d. 560 AH/AD 1165), chief physician at the ‘Aḍudī Hospital in Baghdad, and later court physician to the Abbasid Caliph al-Muqtafī (reg. 1136-1160). This copy was completed some 63 years after the author’s death, in 625 AH/AD 1227-28 by ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Alī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ḥalabī, probably at Baghdad (see title page f. 2v, lines 6-9, transcribed below).

The text is divided into 20 chapters (أبواب; see table of contents on ff. 2v-3r):

Colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. (f. 128v, lines 6-9):

تم الأقراباذين بحمد الله وتوفيقه

الحمد لله حق حمده وصلى الله على سيدنا

محمد نبيه وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين إلى

يوم الدين

The lower margin of f. 128v and all of f. 129r contain notes and prescriptions in a hand other than that of the main scribe, ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Ḥalabī.

Ruling: Misṭarah; 11 lines per page; vertical spacing 8 lines per 10 cm

Script: Very clear, well pointed and vocalised naskh; the scribe was ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Alī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ḥalabī

Ink: Black ink, with rubricated headings

Decoration: Title page (f. 2a), title and author information in cloud bands in box with gold borders, on background of blue with foliate arabesque design partially shaded in red; below and to the left of this is a similar, but less ornate, box containing information relating to the scribe

Binding: Ottoman (?) binding in red leather with blind-tolled borders, medallion and pendants; no envelope flap

Condition: light waterstains, some foxing, and a notable amount bleed-through of black ink

Marginalia: Frequent marginalia by more than one hand

Seals: See ff. 1r, 2r, 3r, 170r
