Content

Treatise on the design and construction of an hydraulic flute playing machine. The treatise is attributed to 'Apollonius the carpenter and geometer (أبلنيوس النجار الهندسي)', who some have identified as the geometer Apollonius of Perga (Ἀπολλώνιος; أبلونيوس; fl ca 200 BC).

Begins (f. 21r, lines 11-15):

... صنعة الزامر لاٮلٮثٮوس (!) النجار

الهندسي يتخذ صندوق مهندم مزفت أو مرصص من

داخله كله أربعة أذرع في عرض أربعة أشبار في ارتفاع

شبرين ونصف ويحجب في وسطه بحجاب حاف من جميع

نواحيه...

Ends (f. 25, lines 6-11):

... فخرج الماء من

الخزانة كله وتفرغت ولا يزال الخزانة الأخرى يعمل

حتى يبلغ وقتها فنيقطع ويبدا الأولى التي كانت تفرغت

بعمل ثم يفرغ هذه فلا تزال هذه الألة يعمل ما كانت لها

إن شاء الله وحده له الحمد والمنة وصلواته على محمد نبيه

وآله الطاهرين

The treatise contains four diagrams:

• Tanks containing two pierced floats, two concentric siphons and two valves (f. 22v);
• Tanks with two concentric siphons with valves and rods (f. 23r);
• Air pipes and flute at top of machine (f. 24v);
• Upper section of machine with water-wheel, gears and cam (f. 25v).
