IN reply to your letter of the 21st May on the subject of the Abu Musa oxide
coucession, [ am directed to iuforiu you that the Marquess of Crewe concurs generally
in the criticisms of the bee re tar}' of State lor foreign Affairs on the German proposals,
but that he will await the views of the Government of India and the Resident in the
i eisian ( « liU , to whom copies of your letter and its enclosures have been communicated,
before discussing in detail the various points at issue. A copy of a telegram which
his Lordship has addressed to the Government of India on the subject is enclosed
herewith for your information.
With reference to the last paragraph of your letter, Lord Crewe would suggest
for Sn R. Grey s consideration that the terms of the proposed ad interim reply to the
German Ambassador might be modified, with a view to rendering its tone somewhat
less unconciliatory, and that it will sullice to inform his Excellency, after promising
careful examination of Messrs. Wonckhaus's proposals, that "His Majesty's Government,
without going into details for the present, think it unlikely that the counter-proposal
of the firm will be found to aiford a suitable basis of settlement, as, to quote one
example only, appears from the difference between their position under the original
contract and that which they now seek to obtain."
