Letter regarding Merewether having sent a Sailor called Brown who he hopes will be able to assist him in settling the Bahrein question satisfactorily.

The letter goes on to enquire about the progress with the Mussendom [Musandam] to Augam [Hengām] telegraph line; the need for another line via Aden; the state of affairs on the northern frontier of Punjab including the attack on a police outpost near Abbothabad [Abbottābād]; his hopes that Sir John Lawrence will soon depart India and that there will be a new Governor-General with new policies in external relations; an update on the Abyssinia expedition and those friends and colleagues who have received honours for it; and concluding with more general news of his work.
