In this letter Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, informs William Newnham, Chief Secretary to Government, Bombay, that on 19 January he will board the Company cruiser, the Aurora , in order to visit the piratical ports on the Arabian coast. Stannus estimates that his trip will last no longer than a month. Stannus states that Assistant Surgeon, James Pringle Riach, will be in charge of the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. during his absence. Other matters discussed include the case of a suspected pirate at Sharga [Sharjah], a quarrel between Rama bin Jauber [Rahma bin Jabir] and Bahrein [Bahrain] and the expected arrival from Persia of His Royal Highness's messenger.
