In this letter Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, provides an account of the state of affairs in the Gulf. His letter includes the following enclosures:
- A translation of a letter, dated 1 April 1824, from Sooltan Bin Suggur [Sulṭān bin Saqr Āl Qāsimī One of the ruling families of the United Arab Emirates; also used to refer to a confederation of seafaring Arabs led by the Qāsimī tribe from Ras al Khaima. , ruler of Sharjah and Ra's al-Khaymah] to Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, in which the former states that he had no idea of the intentions of the two boats which proceeded from Sharga [Sharjah], but promises to discover and detain the perpetrators of the recent act of piracy;
- A translation of an earlier letter from Sooltan Bin Suggur to Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, dated 8 March 1824, in which the former requests written confirmation that he has been given permission to build a small tower at Raselkhyma [Ra's al-Khaymah];
- A translation of a letter, dated 16 April 1824, from Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, to Sooltan Bin Suggur, in which Stannus responds to the latter's letters of 8 March and 1 April, firstly by confirming that Sooltan Bin Suggur is at liberty to make additions to the fortifications at Raselkhyma and secondly by acknowledging Sooltan Bin Suggur's promise to apprehend those involved in what he refers to as the recent piratical outrage;
- A translation of an extract from a letter, dated 8 March 1824, from Shaikh Tahnoon Bin Shackhboot [Tahnun bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan, Shaikh of Abu Dhabi] to Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bushire, wherein the former expresses his suspicion that there has been some kind of secret communication between Sooltan Bin Suggur, Raschid bin Ahmad and the tribe of Wahabee [Wahhabi], in which plans have been made for a renewal of piracy.
In his initial letter to William Newnham, Stannus states that he has received reports that a group of Wahabee insurgents have launched an unsuccessful expedition against the Turkish provinces in the west. Stannus suggests that, in light of these reports, it may be necessary to appoint an Agent at Kattiffe [Al-Qaṭīf]. In addition, Stannus provides news of the recent movements of the Imam of Muscat [Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Sa‘īd] and Rahma Bin Jauber [Rahma bin Jabir] respectively.
