to the Prince Governor A Prince of the Royal line who also acted as Governor of a large Iranian province during the Qājār period (1794-1925). of Shiraz partly by irritation at the petty warfare
to which the enmity between the A1 Khalifah and L the Jalahimah gave
rise.
At the beginning of 1822 both sides appealed to the British author
ities to mediate,-a request which was at once granted on condition thai
the British Government should not be understood to guarantee the
observance by either party of such terms as might be arranged. An
interview took place betweeen 'Abdullah -bin-Abmad and Rahmah-bm-
Jabir at Basidu In the presence of Colonel Kennett, the Acting
Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at that place; but the differences of the chiefs proved
at this time to the irreconcileable. From the fruitless meeting at
Basidu Shaikh 'Abdullah returned to Bahrain, while Rahmah proceeded to
Masqat to lay his grievances before his friend and ally, Saiyid Sa'ul; the
only result of this movement, however, was that a few months later I ie
ruler of Masqat informed the British Resident that he considered Rabmah
to be an altogether unreliable character and declined to accept a respon
sibility for the actions of that chief which the Government ot India
wished to fix upon him.
Tn t 823 earnest but still unsuccessful efforts were made by Lieutenant
McLcod to bring the principal disputants into accord.
At length on the 24th of February 1824, an agreement was signed
in Bahrain before Colonel E. G. Stannus, Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , by Shaikl,
'Abdullah and Rahmah -bin-Jabir, by which they undertook to be at peace
with one another for the future upon certain conditions, principally the
withdrawal by Rabmah of bis protection from the A1 Bu Samait tnbe
and the indemnification by him of Bahrain subjects for certain losses
which lie had inflicted on them. This peace, which seems to have been
observed by both parties for nearly two years, ultimately broke down ; in
lg-'5 an attempt was made by the Resident, but without success, to effect,
a „ accommodation between the Shaikh of Bahrain and the Al Bu Sama.t;
and in the war which was then renewed, the blind and aged Rahmah, as
related in the history of Hasa, perished In an extraordinary and dramatic

In IS-ZO, as we have seen, the Shaikhs of Bahrain submitted to the
ruler of Masqat and undertook to pay him an annual tribute, of which
one instalment was actually discharged; but by 18-22, if not earlier,
they had ceased to observe their engagements. In August 1822,

Theses two volumes make up Volume I, Part IA and Part IB (Historical) (pages i-778 and 779-1624) of the Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , ’Omān and Central Arabia (Government of India: 1915), compiled by John Gordon Lorimer and completed for press by Captain L Birdwood.

Part 1A contains an 'Introduction' (pages i-iii) written by Birdwood in Simla, dated 10 October 1914. There is also a 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Tables' (page v-viii) and 'Detailed Table of Contents' (pages ix-cxxx), both of which cover all volumes and parts of the Gazetteer .

Parts IA and IB consist of nine chapters:

Arrangement

Volume I, Part I has been divided into two bound volumes (1A and 1B) for ease of binding. Part 1A contains an 'Introduction', 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Trees' and 'Detailed Table of Contents'. The content is arranged into nine chapters, with accompanying annexures, that relate to specific geographic regions in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . The chapters are sub-divided into numbered periods according, for example, to the reign of a ruler or regime of a Viceroy, or are arbitrarily based on outstanding land-marks in the history of the region. Each period has been sub-divided into subject headings, each of which has been lettered. The annexures focus on a specific place or historical event. Further subject headings also appear in the right and left margins of the page. Footnotes appear occasionally at the bottom of the page to provide further details and references.

  • Volume I, Part IA: The sequence begins on the first folio with text, on number 1, and ends on the last folio with text, on number 456. Total number of folios: 456. Total number of folios including covers and flysheets: 460.
  • Volume I, Part IB: The sequence begins on the first folio with text, on number 457, and ends on the last folio with text, on number 878. It should be noted that folio 488 is followed by folio 488A. Total number of folios: 423. Total number of folios including covers and flysheets: 427.
