and the British Resident was able to report: " For some time past this
" country has been in perfect tranquillity ; the Arabs kept under due
" restraint; grain of all kinds been very cheap ; the merchants of the

British political relations with Turkish ''Iraq still consisted solely in
the dealings of the East India Company's servants with the local
government.
Reference has already been made to the difficulties in which the British
were involved at Basrah, about 1735, in consequence of hostilities there
between the Persians and the Turks, and to the concessions which it was
found necessary to make in the matter to Nadir Shah ; but the British
Besident at Basrah was not withdrawn, as had at one time been
intended, for the purpose of convincing the Persians that the British had
no leaning towards the Turks; and the Agent at Bandar 'Abbas, who
had been invested at the end of 1735 with discretion to prevent ships
under the Company's protection from visiting Basrah, found no occasion
to exercise his powers.

to Basrah from Baghdad; the object of his journey to the capital, which
htems to ha\e been undertaken on his own responsibility, was to obtain
redress from the Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. for misbehaviour on the part of the Mutasallim During the eighteenth century this was the third most powerful official in Ottoman Iraq (after the Pasha and the Kiya). The title was given specifically to the Governor of Basra.

In 1738 Mr. Dorrill, the Assistant to the Resident at Basrah, was
sent by Mr. Whit well, the Resident, to wait on Ahmad Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. at Baghdad
with a present and solicit his aid in recovering debts due, especially from
Bedouins, to the estate of Mr. French, who had died in the preceding
year. Mr. Dorrill had visited Baghdad in 1737 also. After 20,000
« Telotas " * had been recovered in barley, dates and wheat, the Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders.
recalled the Agha whom he had sent to Basrah to manage the business;
and, as it was seen that nothing further could be expected without more
payments, Mr. Dorrill was ordered to return to Basrah. The cost of
Mr. Dorrill s mission was charged to Mr. French's estate, of which
30,000 Telotas remained unrecovered.

Theses two volumes make up Volume I, Part IA and Part IB (Historical) (pages i-778 and 779-1624) of the Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , ’Omān and Central Arabia (Government of India: 1915), compiled by John Gordon Lorimer and completed for press by Captain L Birdwood.

Part 1A contains an 'Introduction' (pages i-iii) written by Birdwood in Simla, dated 10 October 1914. There is also a 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Tables' (page v-viii) and 'Detailed Table of Contents' (pages ix-cxxx), both of which cover all volumes and parts of the Gazetteer .

Parts IA and IB consist of nine chapters:

Arrangement

Volume I, Part I has been divided into two bound volumes (1A and 1B) for ease of binding. Part 1A contains an 'Introduction', 'Table of Chapters, Annexures, Appendices and Genealogical Trees' and 'Detailed Table of Contents'. The content is arranged into nine chapters, with accompanying annexures, that relate to specific geographic regions in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . The chapters are sub-divided into numbered periods according, for example, to the reign of a ruler or regime of a Viceroy, or are arbitrarily based on outstanding land-marks in the history of the region. Each period has been sub-divided into subject headings, each of which has been lettered. The annexures focus on a specific place or historical event. Further subject headings also appear in the right and left margins of the page. Footnotes appear occasionally at the bottom of the page to provide further details and references.

  • Volume I, Part IB: The sequence begins on the first folio with text, on number 457, and ends on the last folio with text, on number 878. It should be noted that folio 488 is followed by folio 488A. Total number of folios: 423. Total number of folios including covers and flysheets: 427.
