he had rigorously excluded from power and whom he was suspected of a
design to remove from Baghdad. 'Ali Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , who was of humble paren
tage, happened to_be a Persian by race; and this fact invested with sone
plausibility the assertions of his enemies that he was a Shi'ah in disguiie,
prepared to hand over the country to the Shah of Persia,—a notion
which to many minds was confirmed by his successes against the Sunni
Janissaries and Kurds and his failure against the Shi'ah Khazs'il.

the city of Baghdad. A few days later he was arrested in female attire
while attempting to escape to the country, brought back to the Sarai, and
executed.

Basrah, with the districts dependent on it, was administered, as it

the Pashas of Baghdad appointed and removed at will.

In the summer of 1704 the Mutasallim During the eighteenth century this was the third most powerful official in Ottoman Iraq (after the Pasha and the Kiya). The title was given specifically to the Governor of Basra. of Basrah was one Mahmud,
