January last, there are considerations connected with the suppression of the Slave Trade
which, if it can be done without compromising the good faith of the Indian Government,
render it extremely important that a solution of this difficulty in accordance with the
wishes of the Sultan of Zanzibar, should, if possible, be arrived at; and I am to state
that Lord Stanley would be glad to be informed why so much importance is attached by
the Indian authorities to the continued payment of this subsidy by Zanzibar to Muscat;
and whether the Indian Government are pledged to enforce its payment.

WITH reference to my letter of the 27th ultimo, relative to the subsidy awarded by
the Indian Government to be paid by the Sultan of Zanzibar to the Sultan of Muscat, I
am directed by Lord Stanley to transmit to you, for the information of Secretary bir
Stafford Northcote, in case he should not already have received the papers from the Indian
Government, the accompanying copies of two despatches addressed by Her Majesty s
Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and Consul at Zanzibar to the Secretary of the Bombay Government upon
the subject of the payment of the subsidy by Seyd Majid, and the adjustment of the Muscat
claims on His Highness.

In reply to your letter of the 13th instant, I am directed to state, for the information
of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, that Sir Stafford Northcote has withheld his
reply to your former letter on the subject referred to therein, in expectation of receiving a
communication from the Government of India respecting the question of British relations
with Muscat and Zanzibar, and their relations with each other.
In reply to a telegraphic message. Sir Stafford Northcote has been informed that a
letter from the Government of India on this subject was despatched fram Simlah on the
24th of May. It may, therefore, be expected in the course of a few days, immediately on
its receipt the Secretary of State for India will take into consideration the entire question
of the relations of Persia and Muscat and of Muscat and Zanzibar with each other, and
address Lord Stanley on the subject.

WITH reference to previous correspondence on the subject of the Affairs of Muscat
and Zanzibar, I am directed by Sir Stafford Northcote to forward, for the information of
Lord Stanley copy of a letter which he has received bv the last mail from the Government
of India And I am to state that Sir Stafford Northcote, having received this communica
tion purposes to address Lord Stanley, with the least possible delay, on the severa
questions which have arisen out of the relations of the'Chiefs of Muscat and Zanzibar, and
of the former with the Shah of Persia.

This file contains printed copies of correspondence between British officials regarding Britain's attempts to prohibit slave traffic on the East Coast of Africa, relations between Britain and the Sultanate of Zanzibar, and Zanzibar's relations with Muscat. The correspondence dates from September 1866-July 1869.

The file contains translated copies of correspondence between the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed and the Viceroy of India, John Laird Mair Lawrence as well as translated correspondence between an Envoy of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lord Stanley [Edward Henry Stanley].

On folio 42r, the file contains a translation of a letter from Queen Victoria to the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed. The letter confirms the friendly relations between the two and informs the Sultan that a sword has been specially commissioned for him as a gift.

The file also contains translated correspondence between the Sultan of Johanna [Anjouan Island, now part of the Comoros Islands] and Henry Adrian Churchill, Britain's Agent in Zanzibar.
