4. Fiom the high rank and position at Zanzibar of the members selected to form this
mission, it is evident that His Highness the Sultan attaches the highest importance to its
being received with due consideration by Her Majesty's Government.
j 5. I herewith inclose a letter to your Lordship's address from Her Maiestv's Consul
and Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at Zanzibar, which was conveyed by the Envoy.
6. The Envoy is the bearer of a letter from His Highness the Sultan to Her Majesty,
and also of one from His Highness to your Lordship, and he has desired me to request
your Lordship to kindly appoint a time for an interview to deliver them in person.

1 AM directed by Lord Stanley to transmit to you in original, to be laid before
secretary Sir Stafford Northcote, the accompanying despatch, and its inclosures, from
Captain Atkinson, the Acting British Consul at Muscat, reporting that Svud Salim, the
Sultan of Muscat, has been deposed by his brother-in-law Syud Azan 'bin Ghes, and
expelled the country; and with reference to the correspondence as marked in the maroin *
which has passed between this Department and the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. upon the question of
releasing the Sultan of Zanzibar from the obligation which His Highness is under to pay
an annual subsidy to Muscat, I am to request that you will state to Sir Stafford North
cote that it appears to Lord Stanley that the deposition of Syud Salim offers a favourable
opportunity for releasing the Sultan of Zanzibar from the obligation to pay the subsidv in
question, and of thus enabling Her Majesty's Government to make terms with His
Highness for the gradual abolition of the Slave Trade in his dominions.

i AM directed by Lord Stanley to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th
instant announcing the arrival in London of a Mission from His Highness Sayud Maiid
. kaid, fcultan of Zanzibar, and requesting his Lordship to appoint a time for 'an
interview; and I am, in reply to request that you will be good enough to acquaint Sayed
Mahomed bin Sahm, the head of the Mission, that his Lordship will be happy to receive
him and his suite at the Foreign Office on Wednesday next the 25th instant, at 1 o'clock
1 am further to request that you will express to Sayed Mahomed bin Salim, Lord

winch has been caused by his Lordship's unavoidable absence from London connected with
his election.
I am to add that it will afford his Lordship much pleasure to receive you as a
medium of communication between the Mission and Her Majesty's Government.

This file contains printed copies of correspondence between British officials regarding Britain's attempts to prohibit slave traffic on the East Coast of Africa, relations between Britain and the Sultanate of Zanzibar, and Zanzibar's relations with Muscat. The correspondence dates from September 1866-July 1869.

The file contains translated copies of correspondence between the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed and the Viceroy of India, John Laird Mair Lawrence as well as translated correspondence between an Envoy of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lord Stanley [Edward Henry Stanley].

On folio 42r, the file contains a translation of a letter from Queen Victoria to the Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Saeed. The letter confirms the friendly relations between the two and informs the Sultan that a sword has been specially commissioned for him as a gift.

The file also contains translated correspondence between the Sultan of Johanna [Anjouan Island, now part of the Comoros Islands] and Henry Adrian Churchill, Britain's Agent in Zanzibar.
