upon him to hire Cabbins for me in the Saic, never difcover-
ing for whom it was ; he put my Goods aboard, forae and
iome, as he faw his Opportunity. ' He gave me advice, and

der'd me to get good Recommendations to the Officer that

Grand Sigmors Pals. As for the Recommendation, [ did not
much fear to get it, but the Pafs drove me to defpair, bccaufe
I had already been refus'd it.
Thereupon I difcover'd my perplexity to M.
befeeching his Excellency to give me leave to make nfe of the
Letters ot Recommendation which I had from the Enghp Am-
baflador, who was at Tans, when I departed thence, for the
Englifh Ambaflador at Conjiantinople, that I might by his means
obtain a Pafs as an EngliflvMan Which although
Nointel fcrupl'd at firft, yet he confented at length, when I
told him the Urgency of my Occafions. So that he caus'd
his Secretary both to write and carry his Letter to the
Ambaflador, who was very glad to ierve his Excellency in my
behalf. And indeed the Ambaflador purfu'd his Kindnefs with
the greateft Grace in the World, and with a real AfFe&ion,
but without fuccefs. For as the Ca was ready to fign
the Pafs, Some-body gave him private Intimation to take a
