Dear Sir,
I beg to refer to an.article entitled "
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
Oil Wells" by your Cairo Correspondent, published in »The
Observer 1 of the 15th April 1934, in which the following
statement is made in the last two lines of the second para
graph
"....Bahrain belonging to the principality of Muscat."
2. This statement is not correct as Bahrain is an
independent Arab State, under British protection, and has
never belonged to Muscat.
3. The Bahrain Government have drawn my attention to
the paragraph and would be glad if you would take steps to
ensure that mis-statements of this nature, which are distaste
ful to the Ruler and might well have untoward results, are
not permitted to appear in your Journal.
4. I am sure that you will appreciate how desirable it
is that statements in a responsible British journal of the
standing of »The Observer' touching matters of sovereigkty in
this part of the world should be studiously accurate.
5. I should be glad if you would kindly acknowledge the
receipt of this letter.
