BAHREIN OIL CONCESSION DISPUTED.
(From the '"Times" Correspondent.)
Teheran, May 26.
Questions concerning concessions for oil exploitation
in the British-protected Bahrein Island have led the Persian
Government to revive their claim to sovereignty over
the island. Protests have been made to the British
Government and a letter has been sent to the United
States Minister here, stating that the Persian Govern
ment refuse to recognise the concession granted to the
Standard Oil Company of California, on the grounds that
it was granted without their authority or consent.
[On November 26, 1927, the Persian Government put
forward a claim to sovereignty over the Island of Bahrein,
which Sir Austen Chamberlain, then British Foreign
Secretary, declined to recognise in a Note of January 18,
1928. A further Note from the Persian Government on
August 2, 1928, was answered by Sir Austen Chamber
lain on February 18, 1929, in a Note summarised in the
" Times" of March 2, 1929.
A letter to the British Legation in Teheran was cir
culated by the Persian Minister for Foreign Affairs on
August 26, 1930, among members of the League of
Nations, protesting against the granting by the Sheikh of
Bahrein of a concession to a British syndicate to exploit
the oil of the island.]
