The volume contains correspondence relating to a number of subjects, listed below. The principal correspondents throughout are Commander (James) Felix Jones, initially Acting Resident, then Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ; and Henry Lacon Anderson, Secretary to the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. .

The volumes contain correspondence relating to events in the Gulf, and are arranged by subject as follows:

Arrangement

The contents of the volume are arranged under a number of headings (see Scope and Content), each heading having its own title cover sheet. At the front of the first book (folios 1B-8) is an index page of correspondence in the volumes, showing date, letter number, address, subject and page numbers, which refer to the original pagination sequence. The correspondence included under each heading is arranged in approximate chronological order, from the earliest at the front to the latest at the rear, and based on the date of outgoing correspondence sent by the Resident. Responses from Government to the Resident’s letters are arranged directly after the correspondence they respond to.

Many of the incoming and outgoing letters in the volume have a synopsis of the letter’s content written on the reverse, which is usually written at a 90 degree angle to the main written content on the front side.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: This item is in two parts and the foliation sequence runs through both volumes as a continuous sequence. The foliation sequence begins on the title page of part one and ends on the third sheet from the back of part two. The sequence uses numbers written in pencil, which can be found in the top-right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. An original pagination sequence is present between ff 11-297; these numbers are written in ink and can be found in the top left and top right of the verso The back of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'v'. and recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side respectively. The following foliation anomalies occur: 1, 1A and 1B.
