The letter and its enclosure relates to an incident in 1856 in which an African slave detained in Ras-ool-Khyma [Ra’s al-Khaymah] was released from slavery and sent to the Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. in order to return to his own country. The enclosure is an extract of paragraph 8 of 1857 from despatch no.8 of 1857 (folio 213) from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 14 January 1857, which approves of the native’s return to Zanzibar.
