In the fifteenth year of the Hejira, under the 1)a
Caliphat of Omar, a battle between the Arabians
and Persians took place in the vicinity of Cadesia, ^
a city on the Euphrates, distant from Cufa about
forty-five miles. In this battle the fate of Persia CC '
was determined. It is reported to have con- (,t
tinned for three days, and a part of the fourth.
The Persian troops amounted, according to the
Arabian historians, to 130,000: their own, at the
commencement of the engagement, to 30,000: the
former commanded by Rustam Ferookhzad, the

chief Minister of Yezdejerid; and the latter by
Saad Ibn-abou Wekaus, who, however, from an at-

tack of sciatica, was prevented from taking a per- ^
sonal share in the combat. He conferred the com
