battle of Nihawend put an end, in fact, to the Sassa- mam
nian empire; notwithstanding partial struggles after
wards took place against the invaders, in vaiious
provinces. Major Price, in his valuable " Memoirs e11
of Muhammedan History," observes : " That many )"

The battle of Nihawend took place m the year o
the Hejira 21 ( a.d .642) ; and from that period, unt ^
the successful usurpation of Yacoob -ibn-Lais-e.
Suffar, the completion of the conquest of the coun ^
try, and the government of it, were committed to tti
care and management of various Lieutenants noni
nated by the caliphs of Bagdad. Amongst thest ^
the name of Taher, surnamed, by the Caliph, A ^
Mamoon Zul Yemeen, which may be translate ^ ^

Taher was the son of Husain, the son of Mussal ^ een
the son of Zobair; which last was one of thos Ismj
whom the Caliph Omar, on his death-bed, recon to ^
mended, or rather mentioned, to the Faithful in at ^.
