CXIV PRELIMINARY MATTER.
dishonouring the female part ot the deceased s Li-
mily, gave rise to a conspiracy to rid the world ot
so brutal a tyrant. The conspirators, to the amount
of seventy, who were Ghoolams, or men ol his body
guard, attacked his tent as the evening diew in,
they cut the cords by which the tent was supported,
and, after it fell, wherever the canvas appeared to
move they hacked with their scymitars, till the bocty
of Zikey Khan was literally cut in pieces.
On his death-bed, the Vakeel had appointed his
brother, Sadik Khan, guardian to his son. AVe
have seen, that at that time Sadik Khan was
employed in the government of Bussorah, which
he evacuated, and proceeded to Shiraz by forced
marches. The good character of Sadik Khan caused
the inhabitants to throw open the gates to him, to
receive him with joy, and for a moment to hope
that he was destined to restore the former happy
times of the Vakeel. This joy, however, was trans
ient, and these hopes were delusive ; for no sooner
had he gotten his unhappy ward and nephew in his
power, than he deprived him of sight; and by this
cruel act forfeited that which he had hitherto en
joyed, and which, if his judgment had not been per
verted, ought to have been dearer to him than a
crown —the good opinion of all good men.
" But in these cases
"We still have judgment here, that we but teach
" Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return,
" To plague th' inventor. Even-handed Justice
" Returns th' ingredients of our poisoned chalice
" To our own lips."
