tained a desire to proceed with determined resolu
tion, witli the forces then collected at the victorious
stirrup, to meet the Russians in battle; and, by the
resistless force oi his devastating Turks +, and by
his fire-showering, undaunted, foe-chasing cham
pions, dissever the connected arrangements of the
Russians, like the scattered stars of the Northern
Bear. Now, although the prince persevered in his
entreaties and representations to this effect to the
sovereign of Jamshid-like splendor, exalted as Sa-
tiun, yet as the Russians, through the medium of
their envoys, had always the words of peace in their
mouths, and as the Ministers of the eternal empire
were also deliberating on the terms of peace and
cessation of hostilities, the world-embellishing pru
dence of the King of kings, the model of perfect
wisdom, would not either sanction or permit the
Prince Viceroy, in the mean time, to excite the dust
ot slaughter, or to arouse the conflagration of strife
and contention. In consequence of this, when the
days of winter drew near, and the season for mili
tary operations was expiring, the retinue, splendid
as the starry hosts, having moved from the steppe of
Ashkamber, on the 16th of Rejeb-al-Murejjeb, con
ferred lustre on Tabreez by the arrival there of the
dust-scattering, heaven-shaking, perfume-shedding
warriors. Every day the lofty energies of the
prince were employed in completing all arrange-
me nts necessary for the champions fierce as Mars,
+ 11 m ust be observed, the word Turk here, and whenever it is
' n ^U' use of as relating to the Persian army, does not mean Oth-
ma n subjects, but Turcomans in the king's service.
