blotted out. It happened during this time, that
General Malcolm, who in liberality and intrepidity
exceeded all his cotemporaries, had been a second
time appointed Envoy to Iran, by the Go\einor-
general of Hindustan; and he, on his airival at
Bender, communicated his office and appointment
to Ministers. Although the perfect rectitude and
experience of Sir Harford J ones. Baronet, had been
demonstrated in various ways, so that Mirza Abul
Hasan, nephew to Hajy Ibrahim Khan, the former
Vizir, had been appointed to proceed to the English
Government, yet, in consequence of the union and
concord subsisting between both empires, it seemed
necessary to shew distinction to General Malcolm,
and an order for his appearance at court was issued.
At the period when the delightful meadows of Sul-
taniyah, by the presence of the imperial retinue, ex
cited the jealousy of Paradise, General Malcolm
Behadur attained the distinction of kissing his
majesty's carpet, and became the object ol loyal mu
nificence. At this conjuncture, despatches trans
mitted from the English Government to Sir Harfoi
Jones, Baronet, came to Tabreez, and caused his
