With reference to your letter No. P # Z.3841/35
of the 3rd June regarding the Qatar Oil Concession I am
directed by Secretary Sir John Simon to request you to
inform Sir Samuel Hoare that he sees no objection to
the signature of the draft agreement between His
Majesty^ GovernmenL and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company
by a member of the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. on behalf of His
Majesty's Government. The Secretary of State has no
further observations to offer on the terms of the
agreement in question.
2. 1 am to add th t the Secretary of State sees
no objection to Sir Samuel Hoare 1 s proposal that the
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. should be
authorized to accede, after the exchange of letters
regarding the Agreement between the Company and His
Majesty 1 s Government, to the Sheikh of Qatar's request
that he should sign the CommeKial Agreement between the
Company and the Sheikh and that this action should be
taken as indicative that His Majesty's Government approve
the Commercial Agreement.
3. Copies of this letter are being sent to the
Admiralty and to the Petroleum Department.
