The letter relates to reparations paid to the victims of violations of the maritime truce, from monies recovered by the British authorities as compensation. Malet encloses with his letter an extract (folio 202) from a despatch from the Honourable Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 4 May 1853. The despatch relates to the payment of compensation directly to the victims of violations of the maritime truce, and not to the ruler of whom the person is a subject.
