The letter concerns the emancipation of two slaves imported into Bushire, in violation of the Anglo-Persian slave trade treaty. Kemball states that he has sent the slaves onward, on board the Honourable Company's brig Euphrates , to Bombay.
Enclosed with the letter is a copy of letter no.85 of 1853 (folio 315) from Kemball to His Excellency Colonel Justin Sheil, Her Majesty's Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary A diplomatic representative who ranks below an ambassador. The term can be shortened to 'envoy'. at the Court of Persia, dated 7 March 1853. In the letter Kemball states that the two slaves, a boy and a girl, both aged about eight years, were brought as part of larger cargoes of slaves from Zanzibar to Rusul Khymah [Ra's al-Khaymah]. The letter to Sheil also includes the translation of a letter (folio 317) sent by Kemball to Meerza Mahmood Khan, the Persian Commissioner for the Suppression of the Slave Trade, dated 28 February 1853, in which Kemball requests the handover of the two slaves from their owners in Bushire. In his reply (folio 316), also dated 28 February 1853, Khan sends the slaves to Kemball.
