Content

The letter and its enclosure relate to the discovery and rescue in 1853 of a female Somali slave at Muscat, and Kemball’s subsequent efforts to seek the Governor (Imam) of Muscat to punish the subjects of Soor [Sur], believed to be involved in the purchase of the girl. Enclosed with Kemball’s letter is the translated extract of a letter from Khojeh Hiskale, the British Agent at Muscat, to Kemball, dated 20 December 1853. Hiskale’s letter is a report of the Sultan of Muscat Syed Soweynee’s [Thuwaynī bin Sa‘id al-Sa‘id] efforts to ascertain the identity and whereabouts of the slave trader, who is thought to be either in Yemen or Zanzibar.
