Content

The letter is a covering letter, relating to previous correspondence sent to the chief of Jaalan, in relation to acts of piracy alleged to have been committed by his subjects. Enclosed with Kemball’s letter is the translation of a letter (folio 86) from Shaikh Mahomed bin Alee [Muḥammad bin Ali], Governor of Jaalan, to Kemball. The letter is undated, but was received by Kemball on 28 May 1855. In the letter Shaikh Muḥammad gives his account of the circumstances surrounding the plunder of the Centaur , where he considers the responsibility for the plunder lies, and promises of future conduct with regard to shipwrecks along his coast.
